So these will be a very mixed bag otherwise in terms of time signatures and types, nationalities. I have various ways of organising my stuff, but I really work best with alphabetical for my main collection of sheet music folders: it does help to make me remember all the tune names. I should add, the actual sheet music for said tunes I keep in ring binders, one for Jigs, one for Reels, etc., and loosely grouped within the binder by the key of the tune that starts a set. So, I dunno, does this system count as a "cheat sheet"? I used to print all this out on 3x5 cards, but it got too awkward and I don’t read fine print the way I used to, so now it’s whatever fits on a 8.5x11 paper, which then goes into a page protector so I don’t spill beer on it. Since I don’t bother to include the starting bars of each, it’s sometimes iffy as to whether I’ll remember how the next tune starts. So, for example, under "Reels", there I might have Tarbolton Lodge/Longford Collector/Sailor’s Bonnet, and maybe group that with other reel sets that start with an E minor reel. I made a Word doc, and list tunes in the sets I play them in, and group them by jig, hornpipe, reel sets. Re: Organization of tunes on a "cheat sheet"?Īch, fleadh cheoil, y’all are way more organized than I am. I’ve tried different ways to organize and just decided to let it go and watch my small universe unfold on its own. Why do that you might ask? Because there are some days I don’t remember if I ate the sandwich I made for lunch. For that I got a staff lined rubber stamp. I’ll write down a few sets and include incipits where I need them. Sadly that only worked until I ran out of wall space.Īnd sometimes if I’m going to a session (like that happens soooo often now). It was kinda fun to start a, say, reel and follow it with a glance at the "reel" list and play the next one my eye fell on. These lists where at least organized by type. Too, I used to hang sheets of brown wrapping paper on the walls of my small music room and write the names of tunes in big letters so I could see them from anywhere. For that, each time I add a tune to the book/tunelist I add it to a running alphabetical index page on my Mac. Of course once you get past the first couple of pages it can get really hard to find the tune you’re looking for.
Or simply writing in ABC notation would work. If you search long enough you can still find the pocket size Moleskine books with staff lines and write the first 2 bars of A,B,C, etc. I do however keep an up to date incipits book. I do keep my tune list here on the session, where Jeremy has been kind enough to let me choose to display by tune type and that’s enough. It just got to be more effort than it was worth.
